Except for the weather our first trip of the 2017 season came off without a hitch. 6
of us drove to Mammoth on Thursday so we could ski three days. All night the
howling winds and rain did not bode well for the next day's skiing. We parked at
Chair 2 and then had to take the shuttle bus to the Main Lodge because the
chairlifts were closed due to high winds. The only lift running was the Gondola to
McCoy Station, which we rode on until about 10:45 am, when Chair 6 opened.
The skiing was on icy corduroy, which had frozen with the rain after it was
groomed. Snow cats re-cut a trail down each run so there was one way down that
was not as icy. The high winds continued all day and the lifts ran slowly. The top
never did open, but Chair 3 opened around 3:00pm. Julie and Fran skied for a few
hours and had a good time. Mary Jo and Kip arrive. Friday night we all went out to
Giovanni's for dinner, and with leftovers that we had for lunch the next day.

The wind and rain continued Friday night and most of us slept in assuming the worst
for a day of skiing. Finally Bruce and Mary Jo drove to Chair 2 and rode up Chair
10. Only 10 and 4 were in operation due to the wind. After 8 increasingly boring
runs on Rollercoaster in the rain we skied back to Mill Lodge to dry off. But then
Chair 10 closed and we gave up and went shopping. Meanwhile Bernice and Kip
were driven to Chair 2 by Rob, who promptly left. They had to take the shuttle to
Chair 4 to ski. They also gave up after 2 rainy hours. With every one back in the
condo we decide on bowling. 2 hour wait so we get a DVD movie, Captain
Fantastic. Good and may be an Oscar winner. Then a fabulous dinner by Trip
Leader Bernice. Homemade cream of broccoli soup followed by baked pork ribs,
and mashed potatoes. With homemade persimmon bread and gelato. All great.

More wind and rain Saturday night, but sunny on Sunday. We all pack up and head
to the mountain for some new snow. The top got about 30” but did not open until
11:30. We got some first tracks down the Face of Five, but had to be on the
lookout for rocks. Everyone was on the road home by 12, 1 and 3pm. Not a too
bad way to start the season.

Thanks for running a great trip, Bernice.       Bruce
On Sunday afternoon the Gondola line stretched 100 feet outside of
Mc Coy Station.
