The 2016 season, so far, is way better snow wise with a 24" base at the Main Lodge of Mammoth. The first KSC trip had new
snow and a small blizzard on Friday that added a few inches to the base. Saturday was a perfect day of skiing, with new snow and
blue skies. A few inches of fresh snow was perfect for the snowboard in the morning. First tracks in the trees below Solitude back
to Chair 15. Change to skis and then lunch at McCoy Station. Several runs off the top with Scotty's being the best. Last run up
Chair 5 and back to Eagle Lodge. The rest of the group was all over the mountain including the Chair 14 area. Rich E, an original
KSC member, made a trip to Mammoth this weekend to see how a seven year absence from skiing would effect his form. Still
with skiing memories of his youth, he confirmed that although it was fun, this was his last trip. We'll see.
Bruce, Harry, Rich, Kip, Rob and Mary Jo enjoying Saturday evening at the Condo. Harry our trip chairman prepared the dinner
of ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad and carrot cake. A very tasty dinner. Following dinner we had a discussion of
club finances and how to proceed with trips that do not have the full complement of eight members. It was suggested to reduce
the food allowance, eliminate the payment to the Trip Chairman and perhaps increase the cost of the trip per person. All
excellent  ideas that the KSC Board will consider.
The evening morphed into a very spirited putting contest with everyone playing. Note also our wood burning fire. It has probably come to
everyone's attention how bad burning carbon based materials is on the environment and especially in ski resorts. Many ski areas no longer
allow the installation of wood burning fireplaces in new home construction. Perhaps it is time for KSC to get in step with the new climate
model and reduce or stop this warm pastime.
Main Lodge on Sunday. All the racers
left their race skis on the snow.
Top of Chair 23, down the ridge to
Scotty's, with Minarets in the
background. Needs some grooming.
The weather report for Sunday predicted a huge blizzard starting at 10:00am. So Rob, Mary Jo, Kip and Bruce said, great at least an 1 1/2
of skiing. Several good runs down 5, 3 and 2, but with the visibility dropping. Standing in line at the bottom of Stump Alley, the clock on the
gates said 9:56. We look up and it is snowing. We continue skiing but with each run the vertigo from an all white perspective gets worse.
Kip and Rob head back to Eagle Lodge while Mary Jo and I get 4 more runs on Chair 4. At noon we take the come back trail along the
bottom of Lincoln Mountain back to Eagle. We call ahead to have Rob & Kip meet us at the cars. There was enough snow in the parking
lot that I was able to ski all the way to our car.
Snow coming down all the way to Tom's Place but chains were not needed once we reached Highway 395 out of Mammoth. Looking
forward to more of this season, and all the great snow. B
